What is a View and How to use Views?
Firstly, to understand how to use and manage the ‘Views’ feature it is helpful to understand a little about how the software functions internally.
Timeline Studio’s software is basically made of 3 internal components: A Database, A Search engine, A Display area.
All ‘Events’ are added to the database.
The database in then interrogated and the Events are displayed on the timeline.
Used in its simplest form the data transition from database to display is seamless, all Events entered into the database are directly displayed.
As your project builds in complexity with more and more Events so it becomes impractical to just ‘Show everything’, and structuring the data into a number of Views or layers becomes invaluable.
Creating Views
Views can be created at any stage during the progression of your timeline project. They can either be created as and when needed or the project can be structured before any data is entered.
Home View - default settings
As a New Timeline is created it will automatically contain a Home View.
This Home View has 2 basic functions:
1. Timeline files always open to the Home View.
2. The default setting for the Home View allows all new Events to be shown in the Home View.
As your project progresses and you require additional Views, the Home View will need to be modified away from the current ‘Show All Events’ setting.
One useful way to use the Home View is as a project summary, a high level overview of the whole project, backed up by a number of detailed Views.
In practice the Home View tends to be left to last so we’ll return to the Home View after additional Views have been explained.
Create a New View
Creating a New View is simple, firstly select the Views tab from the toolbar:
1. Creating a New View – Select 'Organise Views...' and 'New'.
2. The Views dialogue Box – Name the View and set the View search criteria. Show View Editor
3. Display the View – Select the New View from the Views drop down list. Adjust the on screen layout to give the coorect Event position.
4. Update the View – Use the ‘Update View’ button to save the new layout.
5. Remove unwanted Events – Blowaway unwanted Events using 'Blowaway'. Save this change with the ‘Update View’ button.
All Views appear in the Views drop down list and can be displayed repeatedly by selecting from this list.
As 'New Events' are added to the database they may be called to appear in the Views.
As these Events don’t have a saved position in the View, the View will need to be updated – Use the ‘Update View’ button to save changes.
Completing your Project
With additional Views created, attentions can return to the Home View.
The Home View can now be adjusted to show the required Events by any of these options:
A) Use the Home View Editor and set exact search criteria i.e. add a Search Tag such as 'home' to each Event required in the Home View.
B) Use the Blowaway and Update from Display to remove unwanted Events.
C) Search Events by a keyword in description text.
D) Use a combination of all techniques.
